VOLUNTEER WATER QUALITY MONITORING


The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation is involved in several Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring projects. Data collected by volunteers is vital to the Foundation and regulatory agencies to gain a better "picture" of the basin's water quality.

Local Power Squadrons (non-profit pleasure boating associations) currently test bacteria levels each month at 40 locations in Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

Volunteers have also participated in biological monitoring on the Bogue Falaya River on Lake Pontchartrain's north shore. Volunteer data indicates that rapid suburban development is having a negative impact on the river's water quality and ecological health.
