Mississippi Basin Carbon Project Science Plan Previous Top Next

Anticipated products

The activities outlined in this plan are very ambitious. Limitations of time and resources will necessarily determine the level of detail to which the project can be carried. Essential goals of the project are testing the two central hypotheses, estimating whole-basin carbon budgets, and linking these estimates to global processes and the global CO2 budget. Studies of carbon, sediment, and nutrient budgets in the Mississippi Basin will also provide valuable information relevant to many other problems associated with human land use. Attaining these goals will require many innovations in the application of existing data and models, and in the development of new tools and concepts. Project participants will need to extend the scope of their learning and expertise beyond traditional technical disciplines and interests. Goals and priorities must be set, but flexibility must be maintained to allow for the learning and innovation that are inherent in this project. Accordingly, the following paragraphs focus primarily on products anticipated in the near term, and on some of the more important long-term products.
