Slide 57 57. Liquefaction-induced features similar to the craterlets around Charleston commonly develop in earthquakes worldwide. For example, where a sand-rich cap extended nearly to the ground surface, seismic liquefaction-induced craters and boiling cauldrons of sand developed in the meizoseismal zone of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes. This example from New Madrid shows the graded-bedding portion of what was a boiling cauldron. A schematic depiction is shown in the next slide.
