Slide 56 56. Ages of five prehistoric earthquakes centered around the vicinity of Charleston. Effects of weathering were so strong in craterlets older than mid-Holocene that it was not possible to narrowly bracket their ages. Still, it was determined that numerous strong earthquakes have struck around Charleston and appear to be more frequent through time.

The magnitude of each of these prehistoric earthquakes was clearly relatively high (M>>6), because of their large regional development of liquefaction-induced craterlets.
