Start and End Ports: from Woods Hole, MA to Woods Hole, MA
Number of Days at Sea: 13
Cruise Objectives:
  1. Define geology and shallow structure of westernmost Long Island Sound and selected areas in central Long Island Sound
  2. Determine geologic framework and Quaternary development of area
  3. Identify and map potential geologic hazards
Scientific Party (USGS): Doug Owen
Ken Parolski - Electronics Tech.
Scientific Party (affiliate): Ralph S. Lewis - CT DEP, Chief Scientist
Scientific Equipment:
  • EG&G Uniboom seismic profiling system
  • ORE Geopulse seismic profiling system
  • Klein sidescan sonar system
  • Innerspace and Benthos hydrophone streamers
  • Northstar LORAN-C navigation system
  • TI Silent 700 navigation recorder
  • Analog tape recorder to record seismic
Navigation techniques used: Loran-C
Cruise Funding Source:
Project Title: New England Coastal Geology
Contract:
Remarks: There were numerous equipment failures and problems during this cruise. However, overall the seismic records are satisfactory. Sidescan sonar was run primarily in the westernmost part of the Sound (a winch is needed in the future.) The seismic records were mostly collected using the EG&G Uniboom system with the Benthos streamer.
