MESS-2 standard is no longer available from the manufacturer -- see National Research Council of Canada website for details.

The Acetanilide standard is multi-purpose. It can be run as a Conditioner sample at the very beginning
of a run to make sure the machine is running correctly. Acetanilide has known values for carbon,
hydrogen, and nitrogen so when it is weighed (1-3mg) and run as a Conditioner sample, the values should be
very close to the known values given above. Conditioner samples are never acidified. Acetanilide can also be
run as a K-Factor standard to help calibrate the machine. When it is weighed (1-3mg) and run as a K-Factor,
whether it be for Total or Organic Carbon, the average values should be very close to those given above.
If either the Conditioner or K-Factor values differ greatly (+/- 10 %) from those given above, call the Perkin
Elmer Service Representative.

Standard
Composition
Purpose
Conditioner
1-3mg Acetanilide
Initial analysis of known percentages to ensure proper machine function
K-Factor
1-3mg Acetanilide
Analysis of average known percentages used to calibrate machine
MESS-2
10mg Marine Sediment
Analysis of average known percentages used to calibrate machine
Blank
Clean & Empty Capsule
Used to assure instrument integrity

The Recommended sequence for calibrating the machine for Total Carbon is:
1. Three blanks (air blanks - don't fold capsules for these)
2. Conditioner sample (Acetanilide)
3. Three blanks (folded capsules)
4. Three K-factors (Acetanilide)
5. Blank
6. K-factor
7. Marine sediment (Mess-2)

*For Organic Carbon, follow the sequence through #4, then use acidified standards for 5-7, then start running acidified samples.

K-factors should reproduce from the mean value to within these limits:

Carbon
Hydrogen
Nitrogen
+/- 0.15
+/- 3.75
+/- 0.16

*For Organic Standards:
Mess-2 - weigh out 10mg of standard and acidify with 150µL Sulfurous Acid
Blanks - acidify capsules only
K-Factors - acidify capsule only, then add 1-3mg Acetanilide to acidified capsule
Conditioner - weigh 1-3mg of standard and run (no acidification)
