PREPARING DILUTED ACIDS

When making diluted acids, remember to always add acid to water

PREPARING A DILUTED ACID
Materials Required:
  • Fume Hood
  • Acid
  • Plastic Container for Solution
  • Deionized Water (18.2 megohm - cm at 25°C) also called Milli-Q
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Graduated Cylinder
Acid dilution preparation; link to larger image
Fill the plastic container half full with Milli-Q water. Fill container part way with water; link to larger image
Pour acid into graduated cylinder to desired amount. Measure acid into graduated cylinder
Add the acid to the water. Pour acid into container
Fill the plastic container to the fill line with Milli-Q water. Fill with water to fill line

 

PREPARING SPECIFIC ACIDS
1 N Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
A 1L Solution -
70mL concentrated HCl
930mL Milli-Q Water
5% Nitric Acid (HNO3)
A 1L Solution -
50mL concentrated HNO3
950mL Milli-Q Water
2 N Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)
A 1L Solution -
50mL concentrated H2SO4
950mL Milli-Q Water
