Physical Properties of Long Island Sound Sediment Cores

Image of Core H2C1.

Core H2C1 was taken on June 21, 1996 in 38 meters of water. The core measured 42 cm in length, was x-rayed on June 25, 1996 and was subsampled on November 1, 1996 at 0.5 cm intervals down the whole core. Features noted are seen in the x-ray, water content, and texture profiles above and include mottled sediment, rocks, gas cracks, and some biological features. The water content values above 10 cm are lower than the rest of the core because that section of the core drained during sectioning (evidence for this comes from the gamma attenuation profile which matches both the USGS and BAL water content profiles below 10 cm but shows a denser sediment and water mixture above 10 cm).
