Physical Properties of Long Island Sound Sediment Cores

Data

Data Dictionary

The data dictionary is available in Excel and comma-separated version formats.

Notes

Texture plots end at the last texture sample, not at the bottom of a core.

The PDF images of the cores are to scale, but the GIF images are not. The PDFs range in size from 200 to 800 kb, and may take a couple of minutes to download using a modem.

Any additions or revisions to the texture data can be found in the regular data releases from the Woods Hole Science Center Sediment Texture Laboratory. However, no specific additions or revisions to the USGS LIS texture data are foreseen.

Note for cores B1C1 and B5C5: The textural analyses were conducted in two batches with different analysts running each batch. The clay fraction was higher in the second batch, and some of the clay values were as high or higher than any other values in the sound. The sand values seem appropriate, but the clay and silt values for this core should be viewed with the above caveat in mind. The texture lab conducted a double blind study subsequent to the second analysis of samples from this core. While the study yielded results with ~5% error between replicate samples run at the same time, instrument drift or other factors may account for the relatively significant differences seen in analyses separated by a year or two.
