Physical Properties of Long Island Sound Sediment Cores

Plot 1

      Water Content vs. Fine fraction

Chart of water content vs. fine fraction.

Water content is plotted versus the fine fraction (silt and clay) for all the cores collected in the Long Island Sound (LIS) area. When a linear regression is fit to the water content and fine fraction data, they are shown to be closely correlated (see the plot for the linear regression equation). The correlation becomes even better when samples collected outside the eastern mouth of LIS are excluded. The samples collected outside LIS come from transects J, K, and L, which plot in a cluster below the regression line and have water contents from about 0.25 to 0.70. See Plot 2 for the data and the linear regression equation when transects J, K, and L are excluded. Plot 3 has the samples from outside LIS delineated.
