This bathymetry contour data is in ESRI shapefile format and was derived from a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, National Geophysical Data Center (NOAA-NGDC) ETOPO2 data set; using an ESRI ArcView extension, Spatial Analyst, to create 1000m intervals from a gridded database file (2-minute latitude - longitude resolution).
Purpose:
This dataset supplements the main featured mosaic images of the Puerto Rico trench survey with a Caribbean Sea below ocean surface relief model.

The ETOPO2 CD-ROM is the original source data from which the bathymetric contours were derived. These data are available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC).
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The desired data was extracted from the ETOPO2 CDROM in the ESRI ASCII format in 45-degree blocks using GEODAS grid translator version 4.1.16.

Process_Description:
Bathymetric lines were derived from the temporary grid data set. ArcView 3.2 with Spatial Analyst extension version 1.1 Surface Menu selection "Create Contours" was used to derive relief representing below surface isolines. ArcView "Query Builder" formula tool was used to isolate and derive 1000m contour bathymetry intervals.
This shapefile's coordinate system was re-assigned to Geographic, Geodetic Model: WGS84 in ESRI's ArcMap (Version 8.2) using Arctoolbox Projection tool (Version 8.3)
Although this dataset has been used by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and The U.S. Geological Survey, no warranty, expressed or implied, is made by the USGS as to the accuracy of the data and/or related materials. The act of distribution shall not constitute any such warranty, and no responsibility is assumed by the USGS in the use of these data or related materials.
