Title:
2011_006BISSEDDATA.SHP: Surficial Sediment Data Collected During U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) RV Rafael cruise 2011-006-FA in Block Island Sound off Southwestern Rhode Island (Geographic, WGS84)
Abstract:
The USGS, in cooperation with NOAA, is producing detailed maps of the seafloor off southern New England. The current phase of this cooperative research program is directed toward analyzing how bathymetric relief relates to the distribution of sedimentary environments and benthic communities. As part of this program, digital terrain models (DTMs) from bathymetry collected as part of NOAA's hydrographic charting activities are converted into ESRI raster grids and imagery, verified with bottom sampling and photography, and used to produce interpretations of seabed geology and hydrodynamic processes. Although each of the 7 continuous-coverage, completed surveys individually provides important benthic environmental information, many applications require a geographically broader perspective. For example, the usefulness of individual surveys is limited for the planning and construction of cross-Sound infrastructure, such as cables and pipelines, or for the testing of regional circulation models. To address this need, we integrated the 7 contiguous multibeam bathymetric DTMs into one dataset that covers much of Block Island Sound. The new dataset is adjusted to mean lower low water, is provided in UTM Zone 19 NAD83 and geographic WGS84 projections, and is gridded to 4-m resolution. This resolution is adequate for seafloor-feature and process interpretation, but small enough to be queried and manipulated with standard GIS programs and to allow for future growth. Natural features visible in the grid include boulder lag deposits of submerged moraines, sand-wave fields, and scour depressions that reflect the strength of the oscillating tidal currents. Bedform asymmetry allows interpretations of net sediment transport. Together the merged data reveal a larger, more continuous perspective of bathymetric topography than previously available, providing a fundamental framework for research and resource management activities off this portion of the Rhode Island coast. Interpretations were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data and the ground-truth data used to verify them. For more information on the ground-truth surveys see <http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/operations/ia/public_ds_info.php?fa=2011-006-FA>

    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Textural data and visual descriptions produced from stations of the RV Rafael cruise 2011-006-FA that fall within the study area in Block Island Sound. Visual descriptions of sediment texture were used in areas where samples could not be collected (e.g., rough sea state, swift tidal currents). These stations can be differentiated by the presence of the nodata value '-9999' in all of the numeric analytical fields. However, the navigation and station identifiers are known.

Why was the data set created?

The purpose of this data set is to release the locations, identifiers, grain-size data and(or) textural descriptions of surficial sediments collected at 86 stations in Block Island Sound, offshore southwestern Rhode Island in Geographic, WGS84. These data can be used to provide information on surface geology and sedimentary processes.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2011 (process 1 of 3)
Samples were collected at sixty two stations with a Van Veen grab sampler (Blackwood and Parolski, 2001) equipped with a still and video camera. Visual descriptions were used for 24 additional stations where samples could not be collected. Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Science Center. Coarse fraction determined by sieve; fine fraction determined by Coulter Counter. See Poppe, Williams, and Paskevich (2005) for analytical specifics.

An ESRI shapefile was created in ArcView 3.3 from an ASCII comma-delimited file created by the laboratory's software. The file was added as an Event theme and subsequently converted to a shapefile. This includes verbal textural descriptions for the 24 stations where samples could not be collected. A value of -9999 is a NODATA value entered where samples were not physically collected.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All attributes were checked in a consistent manner.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Navigation was by differential GPS. Although GPS gave the ships' positions rather than that of the SEABOSS, the antenna was located less than 5 m from the blocks on the davit and A-frame, water depths were generally shallow, and scope of the cable minimal. Therefore, SEABOSS offset from the antenna was less than 10 m.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

Depths were measured by the ship's fathometer, are provided are in meters, and are uncorrected for tides.

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

All available grain-size data collected within the study area in Block Island Sound during the RV Rafael cruise 2011-006-FA are included in this data set. Stations range from BIS1 to BIS86.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

No additional checks for consistency were performed on this data.
