Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is a point shapefile representing the approximate location of fields or areas of named coal fields in the conterminous United States. The point locations were digitized from a georeferenced copy of the PDF of USGS OFR 96-092 (Tully, 1996), and Coal Age (2010), Hildebrand (1978), and Mason and Erwin (1955)
Purpose:
This dataset was compiled to update the Coal Fields Map of the Conterminous United States, OFR 96-092.
Supplemental_Information:
Sources used in the abstract and purpose include:

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy was tested by manual comparison of the source with georeferenced digital printouts of the original USGS OFR 96-092
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicates, polygon closure and proper attribution. All polygons were created from existing shapefiles or coverages that had already gone through the USGS publications process.
Completeness_Report:
Data set complete. No data were intentionally omitted from the hard copy and digital source maps.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The shapefile is based on the Tully (1996) map, which does not have an entry for Positional Accuracy in its metadata. The coal field labels on the PDF were representations of generalized areas where the coal fields are located. A point was placed in the most likely location for the coal field. This point file should be considered for labeling purposes only.

Process_Description:
The coal_fields shapefile is based on the PDF for the USGS OFR 96-092 Coalfields of the Conterminous United States (Tully, 1996). The PDF was exported as a tiff file and georeferenced in Albers Equal Area Conic, 1983 Datum. A point shapefile was created and placed on top of the georeferenced tiff. Points were digitized based on the location of the field labels. Simlar processes were used for digitizing points in Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. A text attribute column labeled NAME was created in the shapefile. The points were then attributed based on the publications. The file was then projected to Geographic NAD 1983.
