This dataset is a polygon shapefile representing unassessed Mesozoic (Triassic) basins of the Eastern U.S. The shapefiles were digitized off of a printed map that was done by the Delaware Geological Survey. The scale of the map that was digitized is 1:1,000,000. The map demonstrates the maximum extent of several basins, and their qualitatively assessed potential for coal. These basins have not been quantitatively assessed by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Purpose:
This dataset was compiled to update the Coal Fields Map of the Conterminous United States, OFR 96-092. It was included to demonstrate potential for coal basins and exploration in areas that have not previously been considered.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy was tested by manual comparison of the source with georeferenced digital printouts of the original publication, hard copy printouts and/or symbolized display of the digital geologic data on an interactive computer graphic system.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicates, polygon closure and proper attribution.
Completeness_Report:
Data set complete. No data was intentionally omitted from the hard copy and digital source maps.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The digital file and shapefile was digitized by hand, with a RMS error not exceeding .005 when coordinating the digitizer. Visual comparison of the basins with the digital geologic map of North America displayed some offset, with the maximum being around 1 km.

Series_Information:
Series_Name: Delaware Geological Survey Miscellaneous Map Series
The Mesozoic basins shapefile was digitized by hand from the paper map Benson (1992). The coverage was projected from UTM 18 with a datum of NAD 1927 into geographic, and the datum was converted using the ESRI NADCON datum conversion. The coverage was exported as a shapefile and the polygons were populated with attributes.
