Abstract:
Cowbatg.tif is a 1000-m resolution bathymetric grid of the continental margin offshore of Washington, California, and Oregon. The grid was generated from bathymetric contours (cowbathy.shp, also in this data set) mapped by Chase and others (1992a, b) and by Grim and others (1992) from various sources of bottom topography of the continental margin off the states of Washington, Oregon, and California.

Why was the data set created?

These data are provided to complete a compilation of legacy data, but any users seeking bathymetric data for analysis or display is referred to more recently compiled data such as ETOPO1 (Amante and Eakins, 2009).

These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display geologic and oceanographic information.

How was the data set created?

    Date: 2011 (process 1 of 1)
    Contour data (100-m interval from 200 to 5300 m) from the accompanying shapefile COWBATHY.SHP included in this report and a coastline (for zero depth) from NOAA (NOAA, 2011; Wessel and Smith, 1996) were used to generate a continuous raster with the ArcGIS tool TopoToRaster with the following parameters. All contours were projected to UTM Zone 10, NAD83, coordinate system for this calculation.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
    No formal attribute accuracy tests were conducted.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
    The grid was generated from cowbathy.shp which has a horizontal displacement of as much as 10km.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
    A surface interpolated from the contours in this data set was compared to ETOPO1 bathymetric data (Amante and Eakins, 2009). A depth difference calculation determined that COWBATG underestimates heights and elevations with a standard deviation of 130, partly attibutable to horizontally displaced features.
