Abstract
This volume is the fifth in a series of chronological summaries of the activities and achievements of the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, but it is the first to be published as a public document. As explained in the Preface which follows, the first volume was published in ·1939 through private subscription by interested personnel.
The manuscripts for the following three volumes were reproduced by the Division for internal use only in the 1950's.
