Abstract

Since its inception in 1974 the National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC), U.S. Geological Survey, has rapidly developed to become a focial point for providing information on the availability of cartographic data, including maps/charts, aerial photographics, satellite imagery, geodetic control, digitial mapping data, map materials and related cartographic products. In early years NCIC concentrated its efforts on encoding and entering several major National Mapping Division record collections into its systems. NCIC is now stressing the acquisition of data from sources outside the National Mapping Division, including 37 Federal agencies and more than a thousand State and private insitutions. A critial review has recently been conducted by NCIC of its systems with the aim of improving its efficiency and levels of operation. Several activities which resulted include improving its existing networks, refinement of digital distribution, study of new storage media and related parts.
