Ecological studies of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae in a barrier sand dune
R. E. Koske, W. L. Halvorson
1981, Canadian Journal of Botany (59) 1413-1422
An ecological survey of the vegetation of a barrier dune on the south coast of Rhode Island showed Ammophila breviligulata, Solidago sempervirens, Lathyrus japonicus, and Myrica pensylvanica to be the dominant plant species. All plants were mycorrhizal. Six species of vesicular–arbuscular (VA) fungi occurred in association with these plants, with Gigaspora gigantea and Acaulospora scrobiculata the most abundant. Also...
Mercury in the muscle tissue of fish from three northern Maine lakes
J.J. Akielaszek, T.A. Haines
1981, Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (27) 201-208
There is evidence that fish in Canadian wilderness areas exhibit elevated mercury levels because of the oligotrophic nature of the lakes they inhabit (BROUZES et al. 1977). D'ITRI et al. (1971) reported higher levels of mercury in trout from oligotrophic waters than in trout from eutrophic waters in unpolluted areas....
Speciation of aryloxyethoxyethyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium salts by glass capillary gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography
S. L. Abidi
1981, Journal of Chromatography (213) 463-474
Using glass capillary gas chromatography (GC) and ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a pair of structurally similar microbicides, benzyl diisobutylphenoxyethoxyethyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and its cresoxy-analogue, were effectively resolved and accurately quantified with a high degree of selectivity and specificity. Optimization of conditions in the chromatographic systems to attain...

Naturally occurring and experimentally induced castor bean (Ricinus communis) poisoning in ducks
Wayne I. Jensen, J.P. Allen
1981, Avian Diseases (25) 184-194
Castor bean (Ricinus communis) poisoning accounted for the death of several thousand ducks in the Texas panhandle in the fall and winter months of 1969-1971.Signs of intoxication resembled those of botulism, except for mucoid, blood-tinged excreta. The most common lesions were severe fatty change in the liver, widely distributed internal...
Dairy-processing wastes as a replacement protein source in diets of rainbow trout
G. L. Rumsey, M. Cacace, R. R. Zall, D. J. Lisk
1981, Progressive Fish-Culturist (43) 86-88
Dairy‐processing wastes, not previously used in domestic animal and fish feeds, were evaluated as a replacement protein source in the diet of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). Dairy residue replaced 10% dried whey without reducing growth or feed efficiency, and feed costs were reduced. Growth and feeding efficiency were somewhat reduced...
An outbreak of duck virus enteritis (duck plague) in a captive flock of mixed waterfowl
Roy D. Montgomery, George Stein Jr., Meliton N. Novilla, Sarah S. Hurley, Robert J. Fink
1981, Avian Diseases (25) 207-213
An outbreak of duck virus enteritis occurred in a flock of captive waterfowl composed of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), black ducks (Anas rubripes), and Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Although all three species were housed together, morbidity and mortality were confined to the 227 black ducks and Canada geese, of which 180...

Whooping crane preyed upon by golden eagle
Ronald M. Windingstad, Harry E. Stiles, Roderick C. Drewien
1981, The Auk (98) 393-394
The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is the largest predatory bird in North America and is well known for its predatory abilities. Attacks have been reported on mammals such as whitetail jackrabbits (Lepus townsendi) (McGahan 1967, J. Wildl. Mgmt. 31: 496), pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) (Bruhns 1970, Can. Field-Natur. 84: 301),...

Estimating bird damage from damage incidence in wine grape vineyards
R. W. DeHaven, R. L. Hothem
1981, American Journal of Enology and Viticulture (32) 1-4
Bird damage was measured during 1977 and 1978 at 32 wine grape vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley and North Coastal Region of California. Both the percentage bird loss (PBL) and the percentage of bunches damaged (BDI = bird damage incidence) were determined during 55 total-damage assessments, and the resulting...
Evaluation of coproexamination as a diagnostic test for avian botulism
Wayne I. Jensen
1981, Journal of Wildlife Diseases (17) 171-176
Fecal extracts and blood sera from 113 ducks showing clinical signs of botulism were examined for Clostridium botulinum type C toxin by means of the mouse toxicity test to evaluate coproexamination as a diagnostic procedure, as compared with demonstration of toxin in serum. When death of test mice unprotected with type...

Range extension of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha) into the lower Great Lakes
L. Emery
1981, Fisheries (6) 7-19
In 1979, pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) completed expansion of their range from Lake Superior into each of the other four Great Lakes. Record numbers of pink salmon were observed during the 1979 spawning migrations into Lake Superior tributaries. Although the species was introduced into Lake Superior 24 years ago, movement into the...

Sr isotopic tracer study of the Samail ophiolite, Oman
M. A. Lanphere, R. G. Coleman, C.A. Hopson
1981, Journal of Geophysical Research Solid Earth (86) 2709-2720
We have measured Rb and Sr concentrations and Sr isotopic compositions in 41 whole-rock samples and 12 mineral separates from units of the Samail ophiolite, including peridotite, gabbro, plagiogranite, diabase dikes, and gabbro and websterite dikes within the metamorphic peridotite. Ten samples of cumulate gabbro from the Wadir Kadir section...
Sedimentary framework of the Potomac River estuary, Maryland
Harley J. Knebel, E. Ann Martin, J.L. Glenn, Sally W. Needell
1981, Geological Society of America Bulletin (92) 578-589
Analyses of seismic-reflection profiles, sediment cores, grab samples, and side-scan sonar records, along with previously collected borehole data, reveal the characteristics, distribution, and geologic history of the shallow strata beneath the Potomac River estuary. The lowermost strata are sediments of the Chesapeake Group (lower Miocene to lower Pleistocene) that crop...
Authigenic kaolinite and associated pyrite in chalk of the Cretaceous Niobrara Formation, Eastern Colorado
R. M. Pollastro
1981, Journal of Sedimentary Petrology (51) 553-562
Cores from the Smoky Hill Chalk Member of the Cretaceous Niobrara Formation have several zones containing authigenic kaolinite as spherical, moldic, polycrystalline aggregates that occur within single or multichambered foraminiferal tests and are commonly associated with framboidal pyrite. Such kaolinite is inferred to result from volcanic ash deposited during chalk...
Rank of coal beds of the Narragansett basin, Massachusetts and Rhode Island
P.C. Lyons, H.B. Chase Jr.
1981, International Journal of Coal Geology (1) 155-168
Coal of the Narragansett basin generally has been considered to be anthracite and/or meta-anthracite. However, no single reliable method has been used to distinguish these two ranks in this basin. Three methods — chemical, X-ray, and petrographic — have been used...
