U-Th-Pb measurements of Luna 20 soil
M. Tatsumoto
1973, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (37) 1079-1086
The concentrations of uranium, thorium and lead and the lead isotopic composition of Luna 20 soil were determined. The data indicate that the Luna 20 soil is mainly a mixture of highland anorthosites and low-K basalt, but little KREEP basalt. The U-Th-Pb systematics...
Endrin uptake and release by fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)
R.L. Argyle, G.C. Williams, H.K. Dupree
1973, Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada (30) 1743-1744
Fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) offered diets containing 0.04–4.0 μg endrin/g food (dry weight) rapidly accumulated the pesticide. Amounts in the tissues were directly proportional to amounts in the food. Dietary endrin had no measurable effect on growth or mortality. After endrin was withdrawn from the diet, it rapidly disappeared and...
Extraction and concentration of organic solutes from water
Marvin C. Goldberg, Lewis L. DeLong, Mark Sinclair
1973, Analytical Chemistry (45) 89-93
A continuous extraction apparatus is described. It extracts and simultaneously concentrates organic solutes from water. Any immiscible solvent can be used in this apparatus if the solute will partition between the solvent and water. A concentration factor of up to 105 is obtained with this technique. The dipole moment difference...
Tertiary plate tectonics and high-pressure metamorphism in New Caledonia
R.N. Brothers, M.C. Blake Jr.
1973, Tectonophysics (17) 337-358
The sialic basement of New Caledonia is a Permian-Jurassic greywacke sequence which was folded and metamorphosed to prehnite-pumpellyite or low-grade greenschist facies by the Late Jurassic. Succeeding Cretaceous-Eocene sediments unconformably overlie this basement and extend outwards onto oceanic crust. Tertiary tectonism occurred in three distinct phases.1. During the...
Production of superheated steam from vapor-dominated geothermal reservoirs
A.H. Truesdell, D. E. White
1973, Geothermics (2) 154-173
Vapor-dominated geothermal systems such as Larderello, Italy, The Geysers, California, and Matsukawa, Japan yield dry or superheated steam when exploited. Models for these systems are examined along with production data and the thermodynamic properties of water, steam and rock. It is concluded that...
Isotopic composition of oil-field brines from Kettleman North Dome, California, and their geologic implications
Y.K. Kharaka, F.A.F. Berry, I. Friedman
1973, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (37) 1899-1908
Deuterium and O18 analyses were made on 25 formation-water samples from Miocene (Temblor Formation) and Eocene (McAdams Formation) reservoir rocks at Kettleman North Dome oil field, California, and on three surface water samples from Reef Ridge located about three miles to the west of the field. The δO18 values obtained generally increase with...

1973, Icarus (18) 75-101
The purpose of this paper is to describe the system for the display, processing, and production of image-data products created to support the Mariner 9 Television Experiment. Of necessity, the system was large in order to respond to the needs of a large team of scientists with a broad scope...

Summary of ground-water data, Post Headquarters and adjacent areas, White Sands Missile Range
T. E. Kelly
1973, Report
Geohydrologic data have been obtained from more than 100 wells and test holes that have been drilled in the Post Headquarters and adjacent areas of White Sands Missile Range. Observation-well data show that, in general, a continuous decline of the water table has occurred in the vicinity of the well...

New data on cuprobismutite
Charles M. Taylor, Arthur S. Radtke, C. L. Christ
1973, Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey (1) 99-103
Cuprobismutite from Tunnel Extension Number Two mine, Ohio mining district, Utah, was chemically analyzed using theelectron microprobe. Its empirical formula was determined to be Cu20.8 Ag0.97 Pb0.35 Mn0.22 Bi26.7Sb0.06 Te0.05 Se0.55 S50.4. The tentative conclusion is that unsubstituted cuprobismutite has the chemical formula 6Cu2S*6Bi2S3 rather than the previously ascribed formula 6Cu2S*6Bi2S3 and that cuprobismutite...
Rapid determination of sulfur in rocks
Leonard Shapiro
1973, Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey (1) 81-84
Sulfur is determined turbidimetrically as barium sulfate after an aqua regia attack. The turbidity is formed in an ammoniacal solution from which R2O3 has been centrifuged. Reproducibility of turbidity is obtained by adding barium chloride as a solid rather than as a solution. Sulfur is determined in the range 0.01-4 percent within ±0.02 absolute, or...
Determination of lead, uranium, thorium, and thallium in silicate glass standard materials by isotope dilution mass spectrometry

1973, Analytical Chemistry (45) 880-885
A set of four standard glasses has been prepared which have been doped with 61 different elements at the 500-, 50-, 1-, and 0.02-ppm level. The concentrations of lead, uranium, thorium, and thallium have been determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry at a number of points in each of the...

Tree rings : timekeepers of the past
Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey
1973, Report
A casual look at the top of a tree stump reveals that it is composed of a series of concentric rings-tree rings -that become larger and larger in diameter outward from the center of the stump. Because a single tree ring is usually formed each year, the age of the...
