Physical Properties of Long Island Sound Sediment Cores

Plot 2

      Water Content vs. Fine fraction,
excludes points outside LIS (transects J, K, L)

Chart of water content vs. fine fraction, excludes points outside LIS (transects J, K, L).

Water content is plotted versus the fine fraction (silt and clay) for all the cores collected in Long Island Sound (LIS) proper. Samples from transects J, K, and L, which are located outside the eastern mouth of LIS, are excluded from this plot. When a linear regression is fit to the water content and fine fraction data, they are shown to be closely correlated (see the plot for the linear regression equation). The correlation between water content and fine fraction data may be used to estimate the fine fraction in cores that have water content data but no texture data (e.g., cores A2C1, D2C2, D4C1). See Plot 1 for the data and the linear regression equation when transects J, K, and L are included. Click here for printable copy of data (in PDF form).
