Geospatial Data

This section describes the data collected for this project, the location of the data, and how to access them.

Data Format and Projection

All vector data are delivered as Esri shapefiles in the geographic coordinate system (WGS84). The raster data are in TIFF or JPEG with World (.tfw or .jgw) format and Esri Grids are in Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 18N, in WGS84 projection.

All spatial data are distributed with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata in text (*.txt) and FGDC Classic (*.html) format. Esri ArcCatalog 9.x can also be used to examine the metadata in a variety of additional formats.

Data Access

The complete datasets from this project can be accessed in two different ways, depending on available software.

If you have ArcGIS 9.0 (and above) or ArcView 3.0 (and above), all shapefile and grid data may be viewed and manipulated, although the Spatial Analyst extension will be required to fully examine and work with the Esri grids.
If you do not have any GIS software, a free software download is available to view the data.

If you have ArcGIS 9.0 or higher
Download the data layers individually and uncompress them maintaining the file folder structure outlined in the data catalog below. Once uncompressed, open the ArcMap document NorthCarolina.mxd. This map document has all the data layers loaded in the table of contents and uses relative links, so there is no need to change any pathways for drive letters, if all folders remain the same under the parent directory (data).

If you do not have any GIS Software
View all the data via ArcReader, a free mapping application distributed by Esri for Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems. Download ArcReader and install it. Go to the Esri website at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/download.html and follow the directions for downloading and installing the free software. Once ArcReader is installed, all the data can be viewed by opening the Published Map File (pmf) NorthCarolina.pmf. The PMF file was created with ArcMap 9.3 and cannot be read with older ArcReader versions.

Data Organization

Data layers can be downloaded individually from the internet using the table below. Individual layers are made available in compressed zip file format. Users must have software capable of uncompressing the zip file and can choose from a variety of no-cost options online.

data – top-level directory for all spatial data.

NorthCarolina.mxd – ArcGIS 9.0 map document with all data loaded in the table of contents.

NorthCarolina.pmf – Esri ArcReader (created with Publisher 9.3) map document for use with free ArcReader software. Download ArcReader at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/download.html

backscatter – Folder containing all sidescan-sonar backscatter mosaics in either GeoTIFF or JPEG format. Contains subdirectories: inner_shelf and nearshore.

basemaps – Contains a polygon shapefile outlining the state of North Carolina and a GeoTiff of elevation and bathymetry data, both of which can be used as background data for the coastal regions of North Carolina.

bathymetry – Contains bathymetry grids of the interferometric and single beam-echosounder sonars. Contains subdirectories: inner_shelf and nearshore.

samples – Contains shapefiles of the core and grab sample locations used to validate the sonar and seismic data.

seismics – Contains seismic profile images in JPEG format (compressed) and interpretative grids. Contains subdirectories: interpretation and JPEG

shorelines – Contains Mean High Water (MHW) shorelines from repetitive SWASH surveys.

tracklines – Contains trackline shapefiles for all sidescan sonar, chirp, boomer, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) data. Contains subdirectories: backbarrier, barrierisland, nearshore and innershelf.

trackshots – Contains trackshot point shapefiles for boomer, chirp, and GPR seismic data. Contains subdirectories: backbarrier, barrierisland, nearshore and innershelf.
