Joseph R. Frothingham, Jr. of WHOI uses a sonifier to break p samples from the ocean floor or coastal plain with ultra-high frequency sound waves (20,000 cycles per second). These sediments, then suspended in water, are analyzed for their particular qualities. This work is part of a joint WHOI-USGS study on the Atlantic Continental Shelf and Slope.
