The Research Vessel GOSNOLD is equipped with two deep-sea winches. These winches are the heart of the geological sampling program - where coring devices, bottom samplers and dredges are lowered to the bottom to collect sediments, rocks, shells, and the like, then hoisted aboard for laboratory analysis. This view from the bridge looks toward the bow of the ship.
