ALVIN is a deep-diving research vehicle, designed specifically for ocean research by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  It is 22 feet long, has a displacement of 13 long tons, and a top speed of 6-8 knots.  Its design operating depth is 6,000 feet.  The 7-foot pressure sphere is 1.33 inch thick steel.  It will carry a pilot and one or two scientists.
