PROCEDURE
FOR STARTING THE COULOMETER
Materials
Required:
Fill titration cell: Add KI Granular to Anode Solution until it covers the bottom of the section - insert stir bar into large section. |
Fill KOH,
KI, and AgNO3
traps 1/2 full. |
Attach the nitrogen gas tube to the KOH trap. |
Turn on nitrogen gas (large silver knob) and increase gas flow (approximately 5 psi) using the blue Increase/Decrease knob on the gas tank regulator. Set flow control at 100 cc/min on the flow meter on the heating unit. |
Connect KOH trap to reaction vial.
Connect the reaction vial to the thin section of the AgNO3 trap.
Connect the top of the AgNO3 trap to the thin section of the KI trap.
Connect the top of the KI trap to the titration cell. This is what the completed set-up should look like. |
Teflon tape all joints to avoid leaks. |
Turn on the main power to the heating unit. |
Turn on the main power to the coulometer. |
Turn on the water bath
- set at 11 degrees C. |
Rotate the titration cell
until maximum transmittance (%T) is attained. |
Adjust transmittance to 100%. Never touch the titration cell after this point. |
Remove jumper cable and
connect titration cell to electrodes: |
Turn the cell current on and allow the cell current to titrate the cell solution to its endpoint. The solution color will turn blue when the %T reaches 29.
Reset the coulometer using Reset Button. |
Set the timer for 10 minutes. |
