COULOMETER SET-UP

PROCEDURE FOR STARTING THE COULOMETER
Materials Required: Preparation materials for starting Coulometer; link to larger image

Fill titration cell:
Cathode Solution goes in large section.
Anode Solution goes in small section.

Add KI Granular to Anode Solution until it covers the bottom of the section - insert stir bar into large section.

Fill KOH, KI, and AgNO3 traps 1/2 full.
The KOH trap is the glass vial with the red cap.
The KI trap is the glass vial with the yellow tint.
The AgNO3 trap is the glass vial with the grayish tint.

Add 2-3 drops of 2N H2SO4 to the KI and AgNO3 traps.

Add drops of acid to traps; link to larger image

Attach the nitrogen gas tube to the KOH trap.

Connect gas tube to KOH trap; link to larger image

Turn on nitrogen gas (large silver knob) and increase gas flow (approximately 5 psi) using the blue Increase/Decrease knob on the gas tank regulator.

Set flow control at 100 cc/min on the flow meter on the heating unit.

Connect KOH trap to reaction vial.

KOH traps CO2 out of the gas.

Connect the reaction vial to the thin section of the AgNO3 trap.

AgNO3 traps out H2S.

Rotate the titration cell until maximum transmittance (%T) is attained.

Check the system for bubble transmittance to the titration cell.

Remove jumper cable and connect titration cell to electrodes:
Red to red
Black to black.

Turn the cell current on and allow the cell current to titrate the cell solution to its endpoint.

The solution color will turn blue when the %T reaches 29.
