Figure 2 shows whisker plots of the data for each of the schools measured. Only three schools, Montemalaga Elementary (ME), Palos Verdes High School (PVH), and Silver Spur Elementary (SSE), were found to have one or more rooms with indoor radon levels greater than 10 pCi/L. Palos Verdes High School had rooms with levels greater than 20 pCi/L but all of those rooms were within the same wing (refer to the PVH data for details). Since these data were obtained, the PVPUSD contracted a radon mitigation firm to remediate the high radon levels in these three schools. Post-remediation measurements were made at Palos Verdes High School, and the results show that the remediation was completely successful and reduced the indoor radon to levels at or below the detection limits of the activated charcoal detectors (see the detailed data for specifics). Remediation work at Montemalaga and Silver Spur has been completed but post-remediation measurements have not yet been done. Dapplegray Elementary (DE), Malaga Cove School (MCS), Miraleste Satellite School (MST), Peninsula High School (PH), Rancho Vista Elementary (RVE), and Vista Grande Elementary (VGE) have one or more rooms with indoor radon greater than 4 pCi/L (click on the school names to view data). All of the rooms tested at Cornerstone Elementary (CE), Lunada Bay Elementary (LBE), Palos Verdes Intermediate (PVI), Mira Catalina Elementary (MCE), Miraleste Intermediate (MI), Point Vicente Elementary (PVE), Ridgecrest Intermediate (RI), and Soleado Elementary (SE) had indoor radon levels below 4 pCi/L (click on the school names to view data).

Figure 2. Whisker plots of indoor radon data for schools of the PVPUSD (click here to see a table of school names and the codes used in the figure). The colored rectangles reflect the range of values from the first quartile to the third quartile and the whiskers above and below that rectangle indicate the minimum and maximum values. The horizontal red line indicates the USEPA action level of 4 pCi/L.
