Numerous active investigations are currently studying natural gas hydrate occurrences in marine sediments worldwide to better understand the potential of these deposits as a marine geohazard, an energy resource, and as a factor in global climate change. Natural marine gas hydrates are known to exist on the seafloor of the continental slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico, but there are still significant questions regarding their subsurface distribution and concentration. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is part of a broad consortium of government, industry and academic partners known as the Joint Industry Program (JIP), conducting a detailed, multidisciplinary study of northern Gulf of Mexico hydrates. This program, led by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Chevron Corporation has included several research cruises collecting geological and geophysical data, and a drilling and logging program in April and May 2005. In May 2003, the USGS led a research cruise (USGS cruise ID G1-03-GM) to acquire high-resolution multi-channel seismic reflection data to help characterize the JIP drilling sites. This report gives an overview of the acquisition and data processing of the multichannel seismic reflection profiles and provides links to download these data.
