Previous USGS Gulf of Mexico Research Cruises

The USGS has conducted three previous research cruises in the northern Gulf of Mexico investigating natural gas hydrates. In June 1998, in conjunction with the Marine Minerals Technology Center of the University of Mississippi, the USGS collected seismic data using a variety of acquisition systems along the flanks of the Mississippi Canyon. The cruise report by Cooper et al (1998) gives details of this eleven-day cruise aboard the R/V Tommy Munro (USGS Cruise ID M1-98-GM): http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of98-506/

In April 1999, the USGS led a 13-day research cruise to the Garden Banks and Green Canyon regions of the northern Gulf of Mexico continental slope using the R/V Gyre. This cruise (USGS ID G1-99-GM) is fully described in Cooper et al (1999): http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of99-570/

The multichannel seismic data, navigation data, and trackline maps from these two USGS cruises can be downloaded from the on-line data report (Hart et al, 2002): http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of02-368/

Cooper and Hart (2002) interpreted the USGS seismic data for indications of subbottom gas hydrates and associated free gas. Using these interpretations to select sites likely to contain accumulations of subbottom gas hydrates, a research cruise aboard the French R/V Marion Dufresne in was conducted July 2002, collecting giant piston cores, box cores and heat flow data (Lorenson et al, 2002). This two-week cruise (USGS ID D1-02-GM) was led by the USGS and the Institut Polaire Francais, Paul Emile Victor (IPEV) and included participating scientists from the Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, The Netherlands, Mexico, Russia, and the United States.

Using the USGS cruise ID, metadata and other information for these three research cruises can be obtained from the USGS Infobank website: http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/infobank/programs/html/main/activities.html
