- Abstract:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of Long Island Sound, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data collected north of Duck Pond Point, New York. During April and May 2010, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired during 2 cruises as part of USGS ground-truth reconnaissance surveys of this area. The purpose of this dataset is to release the locations and identifiers of 86 bottom photographs collected at 23 stations on topographic and backscatter data of the seafloor in Long Island Sound north of Duck Pond Point, New York. The photos were collected with modified Van Veen grab samplers modified to carry still and video camera systems during USGS survey 2010-010-FA, conducted in April 2010 and survey 2010-015-FA conducted in May 2010.

The naming convention for photographs is a 3-number location identification (999 for survey H11999), a hyphen, the station number (or number and capitalized letter), and a lower-case letter of the photograph at that station (multiple photos are often taken at a single location), an underscore, and the resolution of the photograph (fr for full resolution, mr for medium resolution, and tn for thumbnail). These data are available in Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shapefile format. The user must have ArcGIS or ArcView 3.0 or greater software to read and process the data file.
