Comparison with historical dissolved-nutrient concentrations in the Salton Sea is difficult to interpret because of strong seasonal variation, and because most of the nitrogen (50 to 75% today) is present as organic nitrogen. Nevertheless, analysis of bottom water (not shown) suggests that dissolved-nitrogen concentration in the Sea has increased several-fold since the mid-1950s, while there has been no discernable increase in phosphorus. |
