Water is vital to life, and water science is the foundation for maintaining healthy and sustainable water resources. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) New England Water Science Center is focused on understanding the quality and movement of the water that sustains our communities and environments. Our data and research inform water management and natural hazard forecasting to protect people, property, and ecosystems. The New England Water Science Center provides reliable and up-to-date information on the water resources of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont to the public and to Federal, State, and Tribal partners.

The New England Water Science Center has offices in East Hartford, Conn.; Northborough Mass.; Pembroke, N.H.; Augusta, Maine; and Montpelier, Vt.

New England’s climate, geology, ecosystems, and the water resource needs of our communities guide our science. We study and monitor New England’s groundwater, rivers, streams, and estuaries. For example, we—

  • • identify and measure contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and arsenic;

  • • study the impacts of floods and droughts on public safety and water availability;

  • • monitor nutrient and constituent pollution that degrades water quality and aquatic systems; and

  • • track the effects of a changing climate.

Our staff includes hydrologic technicians, who collect water-quality, streamflow, and flood mapping data, and hydrologists and physical scientists, who analyze these data and develop statistical models to produce targeted scientific research.
