Liming of acidified waters: issues and research - a report of the International Liming Workshop
R. Kent Schreiber
1982, FWS/OBS 80/40.14
Acidic deposition is a problem of significant national and international concern. It is strongly suspected that acidic deposition has adversely affected aquatic resources in Scandinavia and North America. While substantial resources are being devoted to understanding the causative factors associated with surface water acidification, much less research is being conducted...
Spurs and grooves revisited: construction versus erosion, Looe Key Reef, Florida

1982, Conference Paper, The reef and man: proceedings of the Fourth International Coral Reef Symposium, Manila, Philippines, 18-22 May 1981
Six of 12 core holes drilled at Looe Key Reef (24°37'18"N. 81°24'24"W) by a diver-operated coring device penetrated a spur and groove system. Drilling indicated that: (II the spurs and grooves formed over at least 5 m of carbonate reef sand: (2) the underlying Pleistocene surface is essentially flat and...

Effects of lindane, paraquat, toxaphene, and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid on mallard embryo development
David J. Hoffman, W. C. Eastin Jr.
1982, Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (11) 79-86
The effects were determined of externally treating mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) eggs with two insecticides (lindane and toxaphene) and two herbicides (paraquat and 2,4,5-T) with formulations and concentrations similar to field applications. Paraquat was the most embryotoxic of the four compounds regardless of the type of vehicle. The LC50 for paraquat...

Land Use and land cover and associated maps
Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey
1982, Report
The Geological Survey is compiling land use and land cover and associated maps for the entire United States. Land use refers to man's activities which are directly related to the land. Land cover describes the vegetation, water, natural surface, and artificial constructions at the land surface. These maps will help...
Time of concentration and storage coefficient values for Illinois streams
Julia B. Graf, George Garklavs, Kevin A. Oberg
1982, Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-13
Values of time of concentration and storage coefficient, two unit hydrograph parameters, are presented for 194 and 120 basins in Illinois. Tabulated values consist of those computed by previous investigators as well as those computed for 98 basins as part of this investigation. These additional values were computed by calibration...
Collision of astronomically observable bodies with the Earth
G. W. Wetherill, Eugene Merle Shoemaker
Leon T. Silver, Peter H. Schultz, editor(s)
1982, Book chapter, Geological implications of impacts of large asteroids and comets on the Earth
There are at present about 1,000 Earth-crossing bodies of asteroidal appearance that have diameters greater than 1 km. It is calculated that on the average about 3 of these bodies impact the Earth every million years. Because there are many more small bodies than large ones, impacts of 10-km-diameter objects,...
