Karyological analysis of Ctenopharyngodon idella, Aristichthys nobilis, and their F1 hybrid
M.L. Beck, C.J. Biggers, H.K. Dupree
1980, Transactions of the American Fisheries Society (109) 433-438
Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) and Aristichthys nobilis (bighead carp) have a diploid chromosome number of 48 with no acrocentric chromosomes. The hybrid of these species is triploid with 72 chromosomes. The frequencies of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes suggest that the hybrid receives two maternal and one paternal set of chromosomes....

Accuracy of an estuarine hydrodynamic model using smooth elements
Roy A. Walters, Ralph T. Cheng
1980, Water Resources Research (16) 187-195
A finite element model which uses triangular, isoparametric elements with quadratic basis functions for the two velocity components and linear basis functions for water surface elevation is used in the computation of shallow water wave motions. Specifically addressed are two common uncertainties in this class of two-dimensional hydrodynamic models: the...

Salmonella meningoencephalomyelitis in a northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinsus)
R. K. Stroud, M.E. Roelke
1980, Journal of Wildlife Diseases (16) 15-18
Salmonella enteritidis was isolated from the brain of a neonatal northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) with gross and microscopic lesions of meningoencephalomyelitis. Microscopic lesions in the liver and lung suggested septicemia....
Ocean eddy structure by satellite radar altimetry required for iceberg towing
W. J. Campbell, R. E. Cheney, J. G. Marsh, N. M. Mognard
1980, Cold Regions Science and Technology (1) 211-221
Models for the towing of large tabular icebergs give towing speeds of 0.5 knots to 1.0 knots relative to the ambient near surface current. Recent oceanographic research indicates that the world oceans are not principally composed of large steady-state current systems, like the Gulf Stream, but that most of the...

The comparison of usage and availability measurements for evaluating resource preference
Douglas H. Johnson
1980, Ecology (61) 65-71
Modern ecological research often involves the comparison of the usage of habitat types or food items to the availability of those resources to the animal. Widely used methods of determining preference from measurements of usage and availability depend critically on the array of components that the researcher, often with a...
Monitoring active volcanoes

1980, Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS) (12) 131-134
One of the most spectacular, awesomely beautiful, and at times, most destructive displays of natural energy is an erupting volcano, belching fume and ash thousands of feet into the atmoshpehere and pouring out red-hot molten lava in fountains and streams. ...

Visitor use patterns in Yosemite National Park
J. W. van Wagtendonk
1980, Journal of Travel Research (19) 12-17
After several years of dramatic increases, visitor use in Yosemite National Park has leveled off to an average of 2.4 million visits per year. Coincident with this decline in the growth rate, there have been some changes in visitation trends and patterns. Data collected in the park show that the...

Carole L. Goetz, Carl R. Goodwin
1980, Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-12
A comprehensive assessment of the water quality of Tampa Bay, Florida, was initiated in 1970 to provide background information to evaluate the effects of widening and deepening the ship channel to the port of Tampa. This report provides results of water-quality sampling in the bay from 1972 to 1976, prior...

Structural characteristics of fulvic acids from Continental Shelf sediments
Patrick G. Hatcher, Irving A. Breger, M.A. Mattingly
1980, Nature (285) 560-562
Fulvic acids are those components of soil organic matter that remain soluble after a dilute alkaline extract of the soil is acidified to pH 2 (refs 1, 2). This extraction procedure has been applied to marine sediments, and the organic compounds so recovered have been called marine sedimentary fulvic acids....
