- Abstract:
-
The eastern San Francisco Bay (Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, California) is a geologically complex area divided by faults into a suite of tectonic blocks. Each block contains a unique stratigraphic sequence of Tertiary sediments that in most blocks unconformably overlie Mesozoic sediments. Age and environmental interpretations based on analysis of microfossil assemblages are key factors in interpreting geologic history, structure, and correlation of each block. Much of this data, however, is distributed in unpublished internal reports and memos, and is generally unavailable to the geologic community. In this report the U.S. Geological Survey microfossil data from the Tertiary sediments of Alameda and Contra Costa counties are analyzed and presented in a digital database, which provides a user-friendly summary of the micropaleontologic data, locality information, and biostratigraphic and ecologic interpretations.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this publication is to provide age and environmental interpretations of marine strata in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties based on microfossils. The purpose of this digital database is to provide a quick and easy means of accessing micropaleontologic data, locality information, and a summary of the interpretations. Data for this study are derived from microfossil samples in the U.S. Geological Survey collections, including new samples collected during field work related to the production of U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Reports and Miscellaneous Field Maps (Blake and others, 2000; Graymer, 2000; Graymer and others, 1994a, b, 1996, 2002a; Helley and Graymer, 1997a, b) and samples that were collected to support earlier mapping efforts (Hill, 1983; Radbruch-Hall, 1957, 1969; Radbruch and Case, 1967). The older samples were reviewed for consistency with modern biostratigraphic understanding and revisions made as appropriate. Locality descriptions of some of the older samples were inadequate and the samples could not be located with any certainty. These samples are excluded from the database (table 1). Although Cretaceous samples are included in the database, they are not discussed in the associated report.

This dataset is released in a format utilized by Google Earth software which is available free to the public. References to non-U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) products do not constitute an endorsement by the DOI.
This KMZ archive is a collection of files used to create a KML presentation and includes all the files that are referenced in the .kml file. The KML presentation includes two folders: (1) Tectonic Blocks, and (2) Microfossil Data. The folder 'Tectonic Blocks' contains the line elements which define the lithologic assemblages referred to in the associated report as well as a subfolder entitled 'Names and Stratigraphic Columns' which contains links to PDF files of composite stratigraphic columns for each tectonic block containing micropaleontological data. The folder 'Microfossil Data' includes the point location for each sample and a corresponding balloon with a summary data table. Links to PDFs of the complete microfossil data table for each sample are located on the balloon. A link to the associated written report is also available on the balloon.
Geographic or UTM coordinates for each sample location may indicate locational accuracy greater than that of the original data. Microfossil sample locations in this report were compiled from a variety of sources and formats. We began with some UTM coordinates, some latitude-longitude pairs in DMS (degrees, minutes, and seconds) or decimal degrees that we converted to UTM, some detailed and some poor location maps we transposed to topographic maps, and some extensive as well as some vague written directions we located on maps. The number of decimal places, therefore, is to some degree arbitrary.

Well located data items are intended to have a horizontal positional accuracy within .5 mm at 1:24,000 scale, or within 12 meters on the ground. The general positional accuracy of each point in the database is indicated within the Longitude and Latitude fields. The position of each data item is derived from the USGS topographic base map, and therefore additional inaccuracies arising from inaccuracies in the base map may also be encountered.

Tectonic block or lithologic assemblage of sample. Assemblages are large, fault-bounded blocks that contain a unique stratigraphic sequence. The stratigraphic sequence differs from that of neighboring assemblages by containing different rock units, or by different stratigraphic relationship among similar rock units. These stratigraphic differences represent changes in depositional conditions in one or more large depositional basins. The current adjacent location of the different assemblages reflects the juxtaposition of different basins or parts of basins by large offsets along the faults that bound the assemblages.
