Through coordination of restoration activities, education, advocacy, monitoring of the regulatory process and citizen action, the LPBF works in partnership with all segments of the community to reclaim the waters of the Basin for this and future generations. Although the environmental problems facing the Basin are numerous, most of the damages are reversible. In 1990, the LPBF initiated a process that involved the public, regulatory agencies, universities, civic groups and the business community to create a comprehensive management plan (CMP). The CMP serves as a blueprint to restore the LPB. The major environmental challenges to the LPB are urban runoff, urbanization, poorly treated and untreated sewage, habitat change and loss, wetland loss, saltwater intrusion and agricultural runoff (Figure 1). These challenges and the ways in which the LPBF has worked to address them are outlined in following sections. « Previous | Next » |
