Appendix 4: Species List

Skip past contents information

The four tables in Appendix 4 list all the species that are represented in the USGS CoWCoG database along with their common names, synonyms, and authorities.  The subclasses Hexacorallia, Octocorallia, Ceriantipatharia, and Hydroidolina are listed in Tables A, B, C, and D, respectively.  Within each table, entries are listed alphabetically by taxonomic level beginning with Order.  An authority in parentheses denotes the original authority to have described a species whose name has subsequently changed.  The column labeled “#Records” refers to the number of entries of each species in this database.

The database contains 1,720 entries representing 122 species.  Initially, only scleractinian corals were being researched and entered into this database.  As a result, most of the species included (80) are scleractinians (suborder Hexacorallia).  The suborder Octocorallia is represented in the database by 33 species.  This number is expected to rise substantially as more data are added.  Only nine species of the suborders Ceriantipatharia and Hydroidolina are included.

Table A – Subclass Hexacorallia

Table B – Subclass Octocorallia

Table C – Subclass Ceriantipatharia

Table D – Subclass Hydroidolina
