Supporting Observations

Meteorological Observations

Wind speed and direction, wave height and period, air temperature, sea surface temperature, and barometric pressure are recorded by instruments maintained at Ambrose Light (Station ALSN6 located at 40º27.6' N., 73º49.8' W) and Long Island 33 nm south of Islip (Station 44025 located at 40º15.0' N 73º10.0' W.) by the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) (seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/) (figure 1). Ambrose Light is a tower and the anemometer height is 49 m above sea level. Long Island 44025 is a 3 m discus buoy and the anemometer height is 5 m above sea level. Data was obtained from Station 44025 (www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=44025) and Station ALSN6 (www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=alsn6) at one-hour intervals.

Coastal Sea Level

Sea level was recorded by instruments maintained at Sandy Hook (Station 8531680 located at 40º 28.0' N., 74º 0.6' W., figure 1) by the National Ocean Survey (www.nos.noaa.gov/). Data from Sandy Hook (co-ops.nos.noaa.gov/data_options.shtml?stn=8531680+Sandy+Hook,+NJ) was obtained at one-hour intervals. These elevations were converted to equivalent bottom pressure by adding atmospheric pressure as measured at Ambrose Light (Station ALSN6) (www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=alsn6), see above).
