Time Series Plots

Time series plots of selected data from stations A through F and from the National Data Buoy Center Ambrose Light buoy are presented to provide an overview of the observations. Plots were generated using either hour-averaged data, which show fluctuations with periods of hours, or low-pass filtered data, which show fluctuations with periods of a few days. The low-pass filter removes fluctuations at tidal periods.

Types of Time Series Plots:

Meteorological Observations
Temperature
Salinity
Attenuation, Optical Backscatter, and Acoustic Backscatter
Pressure
Current
By Station
  All Stations at Selected Depths
  Monthly Mean Flow and Variability

Time Series Plots of Meteorological Observations:

Meterological observations at Ambrose Light Station (ALNS06): Air temperature (degrees C), barometric pressure (mb), wind speed (m/s), and significant wave height (m). The data from this station was used to calculate the wind stress plotted with the other time series plots in this report.

Time Series Plots of Attenuation, Optical Backscatter, and Acoustic Backscatter :

Hourly-averaged beam attenuation (m-1) and optical backscatter (volts): At Stations A-E two near-bottom OBS sensors were deployed. No instrumentation was deployed at Station F for measuring optical properties.

Standard deviation of bottom pressure, near-bottom current speed, and optical backscatter: Hourly-averaged standard deviation of pressure (mb), current speed (cm/s) and optical backscatter (volts) from instrumentation near the bottom. At some stations, more than one instrument measured near-bottom beam attenuation and optical backscatter; both are included. Station F had no instrumentation for measuring optical properties.

Image plot of ABS backscatter intensity at Station A and B: Backscatter intensity in the bottom 1 m at Stations A and B, wave velocity, and bottom current speed. Red indicates high intensity.

A and B

Time Series Plots of Pressure:

Low-passed wind stress (from Ambrose Light tower), low-passed bottom pressure (mb), and hour-averaged bottom pressure (mb): The mean has been subtracted from the pressure record prior to plotting. The increase in pressure at the end of the deployment at Station B is when the tripod was dragged and tipped over during an attempt to recover the system by dragging after the recovery system failed.

Time Series Plots of Current by Station:

Low-passed wind stress (from Ambrose Light tower) and low-passed currents (measured by ADCP): Whisker plots of low-passed current at nominally 5 and 15 meters below the surface and at the deepest depth available (Stations A, D and E), or at nominally 5, 15, 30, and 45 meters below the surface and at the deepest depth available (Stations B, C, and F). All currents are in cm/s.

Image plots of low-passed current (ADCP): Whisker plot of low-passed wind stress, and image plots of low-passed eastward and northward current from ADCP observations. ADCP currents are shown for each 1 m bin, color coded by strength. Maroon squares indicate no data.

Image plots of low-passed along-valley and cross-valley current (ADCP): Whisker plot of low-passed wind stress, and low-passed along-valley and cross-valley current from ADCP observations. ADCP currents are shown for each 1 m bin, color coded by strength. Maroon (Stations A and B) or blue squares (Stations C and F) indicate no data. Currents have been rotated along the axis of the valley; rotations by station were: A, 0 degrees; B, 15 degrees, C, 65 degrees; F, 80 degrees.

Animation of ADCP data: The ADCP data can also be viewed using the USGS Velocity Profiler Viewer (VPV) (water.wr.usgs.gov/program/sfbay/vpv/), a program that creates an animation of the current at all depths measured by the ADCP. The VPV data files (with extension .vpv) necessary for viewing using VPV are included in this report for each station. In order to view these files, download the free VPV viewer program (vpv.exe). To run VPV, navigate to the .vpv file in windows, double click on the .vpv file, and choose the vpv.exe program to open. Right click on the animation for help.

Time Series Plots of Current Monthly Mean Flow and Variability:

Monthly mean near-bottom current and principal current ellipse (calculated from BASS/MAVS data) and wind stress: Monthly observed mean current flow (arrows) and the variability (shown as the ellipse centered around the tip of the mean flow arrow) for near-bottom current for shallow Station A and the shelf stations (D and E) and for the valley stations (A, B, and C). All currents are in cm/s. Up is to the north and right is to the east. Typically the current originates at the origin of the mean flow arrow, and flows toward any point within the current ellipse. The current ellipse calculated from the hour-averaged data is typically dominated by the tidal currents. The low-pass filter removes the fluctuating tidal currents. Also included is wind stress.

Up is to the north and right is to the east. Typically the current originates at the origin of the mean flow arrow, and flows toward any point within the current ellipse. Monthly mean current at selected depths and principal current ellipse (calculated from low-passed ADCP data) and wind stress: Monthly observed mean current flow (arrows) and the variability (shown as an ellipse centered around the tip of the mean flow arrow) for current at nominally 5 mbs, 15 mbs and at the deepest observations for Stations A, D and E, and nominally at 5 mbs, 15 mbs, 30 mbs, and at the deepest observation for Stations B, C, and F (all currents in cm/s). Up is to the north and right is to the east. The mean flow and ellipse were calculated for all months with more than 360 hours of data. Typically the current originates at the origin of the mean flow arrow, and flows toward any point within the current ellipse. The low-pass filter removes the fluctuating tidal currents.
