Hour-averaged and low-passed
current observations were sorted into speed and direction bins to provide
a measure of the most frequent current speeds and directions. The current
measurements are sorted into bins defined by 2
cm/s speed
intervals and 20 degree direction intervals. To produce each of tables,
the hour-averaged current records of a given depth were sorted into speed/direction
bins bounded by the speed values along the left side of the table and
the direction values along the top of the table. For example, the upper
left bin would contain all currents of speeds less than 2
cm/s flowing toward
compass directions between 0 and 20 degrees measured clockwise from north. For each bin, the table lists the percentage of the
data values that lie within that bin. The numbers in the far right column are the
percent occurrence in each speed interval, summed across all directions. The numbers in the
bottom-most row are the percent occurrence in each direction interval, summed across all
speeds. The Total Points Sorted and the Percentage of Possible Observations (calculated as total points
sorted divided by the number of hours in the year) at the bottom of the sort figures indicate the data
coverage for each year sorted. During some periods, two instruments were simultaneously in the water
at the same Site; this situation typically occurred for short periods when an existing mooring was
not recovered (usually due to operational issues) prior to deploying a replacement. In these cases,
data for both instruments are included in the sort and the Percentage of Possible Observations may
exceed 100%.
